Mike was born in Germany in 1959. His parents relocated to Worlington in Suffolk, England when Mike was seven years old. In 1981 aged 22 Mike joined RAK in London as assistant engineer working with many successful artists and bands including The Thomson Twins, The Police, The Cure, Donovan and Pink Floyd. In 1984 Calvin Hayes became head of A&R at RAK which is when Mike and Calvin became production partners . In 1986 Mike contributed cymbal overdubs on the hit song C'est La Vie by for Robbie Neville. During 1986 the Mike and Calvin began working on a track which was later to become Johnny Hates Jazz's first single "Me and My Foolish Heart. Phil Thornalley initially recorded the song with Calvin and Mike and began an idea for a band for which they came up with a name Johnny Hates Jazz. Then due to Phil's commitment's with other work the two realised that they needed to find a new lead singer who's voice suited the band's sound. Calvin remembered Clark and thought his vocal style would suit JHJ style so called on him to join the band. Here the Johnny Hates Jazz success story began! ( See The Story Of Johnny Hates Jazz) After JHJ broke up in 1992 Mike began his working with Katrina And The Waves producing their albums "Edge Of The Land" and "Turn Around". In 1995 he and Calvin co produced "Here Comes The Night" featuring Katrina for the Reggae band Native which appeared on the "Ace Venture When Nature Calls" soundtrack. In 1997 Mike produced the successful "Love Shine A Light" by Katrina And The Waves which went on to win the Eurovision Song Contest later that year. In 1999 Mike worked alongside Ashen Datchler (Clark's brother) co-managing girl band Hepburn who had the hit song "I Quit" composed by Phil Thornalley which appeared on the hit TV show Buffy The Vampire Slayer. In 2002 Mike, Darren Walder (JHJ assistant engineer), Alex Cooper and Vince De La Cruz (Katrina and the Waves) formed the successful music agency Caragan. In 2006 Mike produced tracks for Brit award winners Orson.

  1. Mr Datchler, I was on vacation at Blue Waters, Antigua 87(?) at the time your album went to number one in UK charts and well deserved success was yours & the bands. It was a beautiful hotel, sun was shining and the world was a good place and you were swimming in the pool with Raybans on (with a very pretty blond girl by your side)and was so very happy at the news you had gotten that morning. We sent you cocktails in celebrationI but I think the Hotel manager had beaten us with a bottle of champagne which you shared with others around the pool. I remember bizarrely, asking you whether it was kim Wilde on backing vocals of some of your tracks. You were such a polite and decent young man that many other guests didnt believe you a succesful musician! Good luck and continued success to you and the band - your music is fondly remembered by so many.

  12. I've been listening to Johnny Hates Jazz since 1988 and also today in 2010. My friends say I am crazy but at age 40 I still love listen to there music.I wish I could turn back to clock and go back to 1988 because I myself would not change a single day.I like to say I love Johnny Hates Jazz and I will always keep listen to them until the end.Turn back the clock is my favorite song and it's about my life word for word.Thanks to you Clark Datchler for making the best songs of my past I will always love you guys.Bobby Burke of White Marsh, Maryland.   13. I still remember the day when my friend and I formed a duet and took part in a school singing competition singing 'Turn Back The Clock' more than 20 years ago.

    Even though we didn't win, JHJ is definitely one my favourite band and I still remember the lyrics to the songs til this day.
